Travis picked her up from the haus and they went for a drive.
âWhatâs up, Emma? Why are you so upset?â
Emma felt better just to be in his company. âI donât know if Isobel ever told you, but we never knew who our father was.â
âNo, she didnât discuss that with me.â
âWell, Mom wouldnât tell me so I snooped around her room and found our birth certificates.â
âGo on.â Travis glanced at Emma every now and again while trying to keep his eyes on the road as well.
âItâs so horrible. Itâs too horrible to even say.â
âWait. Iâll stop the car.â Travis swerved the car over to the side of the road and turned to face her. âNow go on. Nothing can be that horrible. Just tell me.â
She took a deep breath, and continued, âWhen my mother was young, she lived with a family as a house maid and babysitter.â Emma paused for a moment. âWhen she found she was having twins, the employer said that she could only keep one baby, if she wanted to keep her job.â
âThatâs horrible. Is that it?â
âI wish it were, but thereâs more.â
Travis held her hand.
âIt was the employerâs name on the birth certificate.â
Travis pulled a face. âReally?â
âMom said that he forced her to have relations with him.â
Travisâ jaw dropped. âEmma, thatâs rape. He should be charged and locked up.â
âIt was so long ago, though.â
âDoesnât matter, he can still be charged. Has Rose thought about pressing charges?â
Emma shook her head. âNo, she wouldnât; she feels shameful about the whole thing.â
âDoes Isobel know?â
âNo, you are the only person who knows. You and that horrible man â and that horrible man is my father.â
âNo wonder youâre so upset.â They were silent for a while, then Travis said, âAre you going to tell Isobel?â
âIâll have to at some stage I suppose.â
âIâll go with you if you like. I can drive you down there.â
âThanks, Travis. Youâre really the only person in the world that I can rely on, but how do you think youâll cope when you see Isobel again?â
Travis smiled and looked deep into her eyes. âI was over Isobel a long time ago.â
Emma understood what he meant; it wouldâve come as a shock to him that Isobel had married so soon, to someone she hardly knew.
Travis continued, âBut you know how I feel about you. Iâve come to be very, very fond of you.â
âReally?â
âI love you, Emma.â Travis laughed. âThere, Iâve said it. Iâve put myself out on a ledge and revealed my true feelings.â
It warmed Emmaâs heart to hear his words, but she was not sure that she loved him back. What was love? She knew she wanted to spend all her time with him, and she felt better when he was around, but was that love?
Emma stared into his eyes as he moved his mouth closer to hers. She did not move away when he placed his warm lips over hers. She breathed in his manly scent.
Travis quickly drew away. âSorry about that, Emma. I donât know what came over me.
